The Two-Prong Approach


 

PRE GAME

The Pre Game provides an opportunity for you to start the day out fresh. It forces you to relax and focus on your goals. This section also cultivates confidence through positive affirmations. Finally, it allows you to recognize all of the amazing things going on in your life through counting your blessings. This should be completed when you first wake up in the morning. 

POST GAME

The Post Game allows you to reflect on the positive outcomes from your day. It is important to celebrate successes and look to the next great things on the horizon. This section also allows you to re-focus and relax so you are mentally prepared to take on tomorrow. This should be completed right before your head hits the pillow at night.

Positive Affirmations

Positive affirmations help to boost your self-esteem. They serve as subtle reminders of what makes you special. It is important that we are in frequent communication with ourselves. Self-talk aids in fighting off insecurities that attempt to penetrate our psyche. We need to feed the mind positive thoughts. Remember, whether you think you can or think you can’t, you are right. 

THE SCIENCE: Researchers from Carnegie Mellon found that utilizing daily affirmations makes you more content and reduces the negative impact stress has when solving problems.

 
 
 
 
 

gratitude

Gratitude is the essence of life. It is what keeps you grounded. It keeps you humble. And most of all, it helps you appreciate the great things you have. By counting your blessings on a daily basis, you give happiness a chance to thrive. That is why gratitude statements are included in The Pre Game. 

THE SCIENCE: A 2014 study published in the Journal of Applied Sport Psychology found that gratitude increased an athlete’s self-esteem, which is an essential component to optimal performance.

Visualization

Visualization allows you to know the feeling of hitting the game winning shot prior to the moment arriving. There is no better form of preparation. Daily visualizations allow you to decrease nerves and anxiety around the BIG moment. These should be completed at the end of the Pre Game and Post Game. Relax, with the help of visualization; it’s all been done before. 

THE SCIENCE: Research by Newmark found that Olympians who had employed visualization techniques experienced a positive impact on their biological outcomes and performance.

Short Term Goals

Every day presents a chance to get better. That is why it is important to set short-term goals. Short-term goals allow you to stay on track to accomplish the larger vision. However, by achieving the small victories you can still get a sense of gratification. These “mini-goals” also get you in the habit of taking action. And without action, there can never be results! Remember, these goals should be specific and measurable. 

THE SCIENCE: According to a Harvard goal setting study, dividing a long-term task into short-term goals would both keep student motivation high and help progress towards the ultimate goal.

Long Term Goals

It’s important to keep your eye on the prize, regardless of how far you are away. Long-term goals are your final destination. They are the goals that sink into your subconscious and keep your insides burning with desire. Remember if your goals don’t scare you, then you are not aiming BIG enough. 

THE SCIENCE: According to Ryan and Deci, intrinsic motivation can increase the likelihood of success and sense of accomplishment that a person can experience at the completion of the goal.

CHaLLENGES

Challenges keep you connected with your family, friends, and greatest fans. They also aid in your own self-development and force you to get out of your daily routine. The goal is for you to strengthen your support system while getting outside of your comfort zone. Challenges can be for encouragement when times are good. They also can provide an outlet when you’re in a rut. If the challenge involves someone you know, call or text them for some positive vibes. Otherwise, if you don’t have a personal relationship with the individual then write them a letter of admiration. 

THE SCIENCE: Researchers at Michigan State University (Chopick) discovered that positive family and friend relationships correlated to better health and happiness.
